Valley View

The Valley View trail be reached by continuing on past Lionhead. This trail will take you along the south edge of Hwy 20 until you reach Valley View. Here you can see the Centennials, Henry's Lake and Henry's Flat. As with most of the Rockies in this region, this area is rich in history. First discovered by Andrew Henry in 1810 and where Jim Bridger squirmished with the Blackfeet. This area was also the site where General Howard pursued the Nez Perce and their noble Chief Joseph and is also the final burial site of the first Native American woman chief - Sarah Winnemucca. In 1860, an exploration was led by Capt. W.F. Raynolds along with Jim Bridger and Ferdinand Hayden. In 1871, Hayden came back with his survey team including Willam Henry Jackson and Thomas Moran, to explore the Yellowstone region and in 1872, history was born.

Today the Valley View area sits in quiet obscurity except for the winter snowmobiler and the fisherman who enjoy the world class Henry's Lake. As you look east towards the Centennials, you see the giant rockies and Continental Divide continue on as it was when Andrew Henry first came upon this region.

Enjoy the moment and history of where you are but don't stay long because it was a long ride to get here and you should be thinking about heading back to West Yellowstone. Take the Twin Creek trail and the Mosquito Cutoff on the way back to make it a full days journey and say you had a great ride and saw part of history.
