Yellowstone Lodging - Area Attractions:
Hebgen Lake
offers great power or sail boating and world class fly
fishing. The lake was created in 1915 by Hebgen Dam across
the Madison River. The recreational area covers 12,000
acres and has all conveniences: boat rentals, marinas,
camping and food service. There is plenty of access to
fishing.
Madison River
Canyon Earthquake Area is the site where a massive earthquake
struck in 1959. Half the mountain slid into the canyon,
killing 28 people. The slide area stretches over 37,800
acres; 80 million tons of rock came crashing down. Quake
Lake was formed by the slide when huge slabs of rock crashed
down and blocked the river. The earthquake caused a tidal
wave that ripped across Hebgen Lake 6 miles away and poured
over the dam. Luckily the dam held. The quake, the biggest
in this region of the Rocky Mountains, measured 7.5 on
the Richter scale. The quake area has a visitor center;
open Memorial Day through Labor Day, (406) 646-7369. Maps
for a self-guided tour show the route to Refuge Point,
Cabin Creek Scarp area, the lake's east end "ghost
village," and point out the turnouts where interpretive
signs tell the whole story.

Other recent
attractions for West Yellowstone include the National
Geographic's Imax Theater and the Grizzly Discovery Center
Even though
West Yellowstone has one of the largest selections of
accommodations for the gateway communities, reservations
fill up fast in the summer. If you plan on touring
the old faithful and geyser basin areas, then West Yellowstone
should be considered as a base locale.
Many flyfisherman
use West Yellowstone as the center of their fly fishing
expeditions and venture out in every direction each day
to test their skills. In the winter, West Yellowstone
is snowmobiler "user friendly" and one should
take advantage of the hundreds of miles of less crowded
groomed trails "outside" of Yellowstone National
Park, you and your back will be pleasantly surprised.
After a hard day of your favorite passion, you will find
